INTO THE DEEP
INSPIRATION
12/26/06 . . . Faith is a Spiritual Substance

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen
- Hebrews 11:1.

Faith is an actual, spiritual substance. The shape of it changes often, but its existence is solid and real. Being stewards of this incredible gift and the power it contains, we should diligently guard it, work to cultivate its growth and strive to exercise it fully.

Faith is the fiery touch of God that ignites our hope and kindles our dreams until they
blaze into reality.

Faith is alive.  Like a beating heart, it pumps Jesus' blood of victory into every promise.

Faith is God's seal upon our spirits—His pledge that we'll have what we're waiting for,
in His perfect timing.

Faith is the glue that bonds us tightly to the Lord during those trials that last for years.  It
keeps us from wriggling loose.

Faith radically improves our vision. We see proof of God's friendship everywhere when
others are spiritually blind.

Faith solicits the very best, "even if it hurts." Faith stirs up the bravest prayers—the kind
that touch our Savior's heart.

Faith is the fuel that propels us forward, day after day, always nearer to the Prize.

God never forces His gifts on us.  Even the vital substance of faith is set before us to choose. We can take just a little, or we can load our hearts and minds to overflowing.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God - Romans 10:17.

We can feast on the written Word and be filled with anticipation.  We can listen for the Spirit's encouraging voice and watch for the pictures He paints in our minds.  We can welcome God to our dreams at night and receive His presentations.  Every type of word from the Lord will feed and increase our faith.

12/13/06 . . .The One Who Collects My Tears

One of my favorite things about God is His patience with my human frailty. He doesn't belittle me for being weak. With genuine love and devotion, God never tires of listening to me.  My struggles, thoughts and emotions are always important to Him.

When I tell the Lord about someone's unkindness to me, He never says, "That happened to me one time.   Let me tell you about it."   He doesn't shift the focus away from me and onto Himself.   Instead, He listens to my story with no desire to interrupt.

You keep track of all my sorrows.   You have collected all my tears in your bottle.   You have recorded each one in your book - Psalm 56:8, NLT.

I never feel ignored by God or insignificant to Him.   In fact, I know that He's delighted with me. It doesn't bother Him the slightest bit that I'm "only a woman" or that according to worldly measures I have little influence or money. God is the One who enjoys my company even though others may think I'm irrelevant. He's the One who declares my value when society says I haven't achieved enough.

How can I help but praise Him—this wonderful One who collects my tears in a bottle?

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song - Psalm 28:7 NIV.

12/5/06 . . . What Do You Think About?

. . . whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy: meditate on these things - Philippians 4:8.

Thinking good thoughts is like clearing a smooth, straight path between ourselves and the presence of God.  Purity is drawn to purity, so this path will be well traveled.  In contrast, negative and impure thoughts are like rocks that cause us to stumble and fall. These hazards either slow us down or prevent us from getting to God at all.

Keeping our minds focused on positive, holy things will take some effort, but the rewards will be amazing. Increased energy, peace and joy will come from our closer connection to God.  People will notice a difference in us, and the Lord will be glorified.

I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches.   I will meditate on Your precepts and contemplate Your ways.  I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word - Psalm 119:14-16.

11/29/06 . . . The Time of Reckoning

Many who call themselves Christians are not really born again. They haven't reached that point of decision—the time of reckoning when they understand the level of commitment God requires from His people. Some get this revelation right away, while others need to travel down the road awhile before their eyes are completely opened.

Being one who was slow to respond, even after attending church, I understand the need to see our true condition before we're able to repent.  I'm grateful that God deals with us individually.  I want every reader to be aware that ultimately, the Lord insists on commitment.

So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth - Revelation 3:16.

This world is a battleground, and God is recruiting soldiers. Christianity has never been a
game. It's an allegiance to God that is proven by the fruit we bear.

Jesus' blood covers every one of our messy mistakes and wipes our slate clean every day—but only after we've come to the place of true remorse for our sin. Only when we must have God above all else and lay our lives down in surrender to Him.

Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father who is in heaven - Matthew 7:21 TNIV.

11/22/06 . . . Reaping What We Sow

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart - Galatians 6:7-9.

Do not be deceived.   These four words are extremely important. Too many Christians have gradually stepped into subtle sins that have not-so-subtle consequences. Don't ever forget that Satan convinced brilliant, holy angels to rebel against God, with catastrophic results. He is up to the same tricks here on Earth—now within the church. He is a master of deception.

For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption.  Attempting to satisfy our physical and emotional needs outside of God's parameters certainly fits this category. Overindulgence or addiction of any kind is not a good thing. Putting material gain ahead of spiritual prosperity is always wrong. And deciding we can do anything without the blessing and help of God is downright foolish.

But he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.   We can wisely choose this path every morning. Hearing the voice of God through His Word and His Spirit is vital to doing His will. Every honorable choice and every righteous sacrifice is a powerful seed that we sow. And the harvest we reap is finer than any treasure the world has to offer.

And let us not grow weary while doing good.   Maybe you've been waiting a long time to reap some important harvests. Spiritual battles can get intense, and you would enjoy some rest.  Or perhaps you've experienced a difficult loss and don't know the reason why.  What better time than right now to listen for the voice of God who whispers to us all?  Come closer.  Come into My presence.   I AM who you need.   Now is the season to reap from Me.

11/16/06 . . . A Position of Power

What's the big deal about holiness? Do I really need to be good since Jesus already paid for my sins?  If you're truly born again, the Holy Spirit will lead you into ever-increasing purity. At some point, your grasp of holiness will reach beyond the simple concept of "good behavior." One day you'll experience the freedom and lightness that comes from close alignment with God.  Great joy will come from pleasing Him.

If you strive to walk in holiness, then the kingdom of God—His mighty spiritual government and His providential agenda—begins to take root in your thinking. You start to want what God wants. You begin to see with spiritual eyes and love with a circumcised heart (Deuteronomy 30:6). Irreversible changes occur within, and now there is no turning back.

Holiness helps you to fall in love with God. You become His committed personal friend (Matthew 5:8), and He is thrilled with your new-found motives. Your prayers are now unselfish and a pleasure to His ears.  Holiness brings you to an exciting position of power—to a place where God will move at your request.

When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere."Ah, my lord, what will we do now?" he cried out to Elisha. "Don't be afraid!" Elisha told him. "For there are more on our side than on theirs!" Then Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!" The LORD opened his servant's eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire. As the Aramean army advanced toward them, Elisha prayed, "O LORD, please make them blind." And the LORD did as Elisha asked - 2 Kings 6:15-18 NLT.

11/2/06 . . . In Position

The story of Joseph holds many lessons for Christians today. One of them is the importance of being in the right place at the right time—with the right attitude.  Because Joseph bowed his spirit to the mighty hand of God, he was in perfect alignment with His providential plan.

After 13 years in captivity, Joseph's big breakthrough happened in the span of a few hours. One minute he was in jail, performing his daily chores. A short while later, he was clean-shaven and wearing his best prison clothes while standing before Pharaoh. Because Joseph drew near to God during his years of confinement, he was able to interpret Pharaoh's two dreams, then boldly and wisely advise him on how to prepare for the future.  Before the sun set that day, Joseph was hearing these words from Pharaoh:

You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you." And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt." Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph's hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. And he had him ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him, "Bow the knee!" So he set him over all the land of Egypt. Pharaoh also said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt." - Genesis 41:40-44.

Talk about a promotion!  Joseph went directly from imprisonment to second-in-command of Egypt.

God has a plan for each of His children, to use us in powerful ways. If we are submitted to Him and are waiting faithfully—in position—for as long as He requires, then our change of status will also come to pass. This may be gradual, or it could be quite dramatic. God will bless us with material goods, but more importantly, He will increase our influence in this world. Like Joseph, our words and actions will help many people.

And God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance - Genesis 45:7.

10/27/06 . . . It's Just the Beginning

Salvation is so much more than some people realize. Getting saved from eternal torment in hell is just the beginning. Every day thereafter brings practical opportunity for deliverance here on Earth.  By Jesus' blood, God has already set us free from all that's detrimental, and He wants us to walk in this liberty.

". . . He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord" - Luke 4:18, 19.

Are you lonely?  God wants to be your Best Friend and love you unconditionally. He will whisper secrets like you've never heard before.

Are you afraid?  God will save you from all your fears.  You'll be strong and courageous like the heroes of the Bible.

Are you weak? Of course! We all are. But God will save you from every bully. When you learn to depend on Him completely, the giants of the land will quickly pack their bags.

Do you need specific direction? God has all the answers you need. He's waiting for you to draw near enough to hear His voice.

Do you need healing of any kind?  Then stir up your faith to believe! The Great Physician is ready to mend all of your broken places.

Salvation is too great for limitations. Like an acorn, it grows into a mighty oak with deep roots  and lofty branches, offering wisdom and protection to all who come near. Salvation reaches beyond ourselves to every person within our reach.

After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: "Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God . . ."
- Revelation 19:1 NIV.

10/22/06 . . . With All Your Heart

Is there distance between you and God?  And if so, does it seem okay?   If both your answers are "yes," then you have cause for concern. God wants Christians to love Him completely, and a casual acquaintance simply will not do this. Extravagant love comes only from intimate friends.

Beware of habitually choosing the charms of this world to comfort yourself.  Don't turn your back on the greatest Love ever known.   Run after God, and seek Him with all your heart!  He is the special Prize to be won.

"And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." This is the first commandment - Mark 12:30.

Your relationship with God may already be warm and cozy. But if He wants you even closer, you'll be wise to not resist.  A growing dissatisfaction with life can be a very good thing if God is causing the discontent.  In His attempts to draw you near, the Holy Spirit opens your eyes to the deceit and corruption of this world.  Then, as always, God offers Himself as the answer to your dilemma.   Investing your time in knowing Him brings deep satisfaction, and life will be fun again.

10/14/06 . . . He Shall Direct Your Paths

God spoke to me in a dream last week.   He told me to stand on everything He's taught me so far.
I know that sounds quite simple, and it's something we all should keep in mind.  But the enemy is skilled at distracting us from the truth.

In my dream, I was fleeing from Nazis who planned to kill me.  I was hiding in a dark, dirty room. Near the top of one wall was a small window, and right beneath it was a very tall chest of drawers. By standing on top of this towering piece of furniture, I was able to escape through the window to freedom in the countryside.

The Holy Spirit revealed to me the meaning of the dream:  The contents of the drawers represent spiritual treasures I have gathered over the years. I must climb to the top and stand on them. I must use them to thwart the enemy.  Instead of lapsing into fighting battles in my own strength and reasoning, I must use the mighty spiritual weapons that God has given me. Nothing else will work.

The enemy always hopes we'll react with human effort.  Please don't step into this trap of futility. It will drain your energy and slowly destroy your hope because of repeated failure. Stop to consider the spiritual weapons in your arsenal, then stand on these valuable truths. They will expose the enemy and give you victory in every battle. Don't listen to the frightful noise of this world, but turn your ear to the voice of God.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths - Proverbs 3:5,6.

10/3/06 . . . The Pure in Heart

God doesn't insist on perfection from us here on Earth, but having a pure heart—a desire for holiness—is required if we want to be close Him.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God - Matthew 5:8.

I believe our level of holiness and our desire to be near God both grow at a similar rate. The cleaner we get, the more we want to know the Lord.

Even the demands of God upon us will lead to purification.  To be successful with any assignment, we must lather up with the Word, scrub with prayer and rinse thoroughly with worship.  Then, once we're clean and fresh, we are drawn to remain in His presence.

Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place?  He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully.  He shall receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation - Psalm 24:3-5.

9/22/06 . . . Rejoice and Be Glad

God will always encourage and teach me if I give Him half a chance, and today was no exception. He had a few words for me about a matter that brought concern:

This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it - Psalm 118:24.

God emphasized that HE made this day, and then He said, "Today does NOT belong to satan.   The enemy has no legal right to steal the joy of a day that I have made for you—so don't allow it."

I love how God gets straight to the point. He knows exactly what I need to hear and what will be most effective. His morning communication set my day on a positive track.  He also brought to mind a captivating hymn that I've heard since childhood:

This is My Father's World
by Maltbie D. Babcock

This is my Father's world, and to my listening ears
all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought
of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise,
the morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker's praise.
This is my Father's world: He shines in all that's fair;
in the rustling grass I hear Him pass; He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father's world. O let me ne'er forget
that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father's world: why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King; let the heavens ring! God reigns; let the earth be glad!

9/17/06 . . . Redeem the Time

Time is running out. The sun is dropping low in the sky of this spiritual era.  If we want to play a significant role in the grand finale, we must get our ducks in a row.  The areas we've neglected must hold a new priority.  Without the Word, we are foolish and weak. Without prayer, the victories we desire will not take place. Without worship, we cannot enter God's presence to receive what we need to complete our assignments.

A sense of urgency has begun to permeate my days—a resolve to accomplish the will of God and a strong desire to please Him.   Most of what I do is now measured against a plumbline of spiritual accountability.   I look at how I spend my time, and I assess the eternal value.

I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work - John 9:4.

A common demonic strategy is to sidetrack us from usefulness in these last days.  We're attacked at our weakest points repeatedly—whatever it takes to extinguish our hope and derail us.  We must recognize this evil plan, then quickly draw near to God.  In His glorious presence, we easily switch from defense to offense. Our fears are dissolved, and hope is reborn.

Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light." See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil - Ephesians 5:14-16.

9/10/06 . . . Wake Up !

Every morning of my vacation I awoke to the bold, shrill call of an Osprey that perched in a palm tree across the road. The first time this happened I thought of how the bird was acting just like a rooster, announcing the start of a fresh new day. Then I began thinking of how the church needs to be more spiritually aware and that God is sending wake-up calls. I wrote this down so I wouldn't forget. This could be a good article.

A few days later I picked up my notes, but they didn't make much sense. I wondered why I'd thought an Osprey's loud morning voice could offer a lesson for the church.  How did I come up with that?  I must be careful with what I write. Then God spoke to me.  He explained that my scribbled memo didn't come through human reasoning.  Then He said, "I'm the One who inspired those thoughts."  He reminded me that I have the gift of prophecy.  Then He told me to deliver this simple message:

God says, "Wake up, church!"

There.  I've delivered the message.  Now, how will you respond?  What is God asking of you that is sleepily pushed aside, day after day?  Well now is the time to do it!

Lethargy is poisonous, so shake it off!  Take that step of obedience.  Then take another.  Every time you obey the Lord, your spirit becomes more aligned with Him and increasingly more alert.

Awake, awake, O Zion, clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised and defiled will not enter you again. Shake off your dust; rise up, sit enthroned, O Jerusalem. Free yourself from the chains on your neck, O captive Daughter of Zion - Isaiah 52:1,2 NIV.

8/23/06 . . . A Powerful Weapon

One summer day I found a snake draped through the center of a large shrub near my front door.  I used a broom to push at the intruder, hoping it would streak across the yard.  Instead, it slid into the depths of the bush and out of site.

Using the internet, I learned that the snake was a "black racer" and not venomous. This species eats plenty of mice, but also birds and their eggs. Now I was worried about the little Carolina Wrens that recently fledged from their nest in my garage. They were learning to catch the bugs that are drawn to my flowering shrubs. Hummingbirds also visit these plants throughout the day.

I went to a hardware store to buy some snake repellant—a smelly combination of mothball ingredients and sulphur. I sprinkled this liberally into the bushes around my house, and I haven't seen the reptile again.

Later in the week I was sitting at my computer, looking at digital photos of the snake and thinking about the threat this ugly creature was to the birds.  I remembered how the mothballs and sulpher caused the snake to leave. At this point, my thoughts were interrupted by God.  He began comparing the snake in the bush to the spiritual enemies I've been fighting.  Then He told me, "Just as the smell of mothballs and sulpher repelled the snake, the scent of praise will drive away your enemies."

Think about that! To our spiritual enemies, the "scent of praise" becomes a repulsive stench.  It is strong enough to make them leave.

Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated - 2 Chronicles 20:22.

8/1/06 . . . Purpose

Most animals begin their lives in spring or summer, when the air is warm and food is plentiful. Last week I found a nest of baby wrens inside my garage. The mother flies in through an open window with fresh bugs to drop into hungry mouths. These tiny creatures will leave the nest at less than three weeks old.  Earlier this summer, my sister found a newborn turtle in a creek near her home. To increase its chance of survival, she's keeping it in an aquarium for its first year.

Baby birds are tenderly cared for, needing only a few weeks before they fly and a couple more months to become mature.  In contrast, turtles are abandoned at birth and will need many years to reach full size.  Of course the purpose of birds is quite different from the purpose of turtles.

Like the animals, our place of birth and ongoing circumstances are designed by God to prepare us for a specific purpose in life. Some people are like baby birds, getting a quick jump off the starting line.  And others are born into adversity, growing slowly but surely and overcoming great odds.  They are very much like the turtle.  Because God is perfectly sovereign and wise, every person's experience and rate of growth will line up with His plan for them.

. . . all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose - Romans 8:28.

If you trust God completely with your life, there's no need to compare yourself with others. Embrace your individuality! You are distinctive and irreplaceable.  Everything you've enjoyed or endured has brought you to a special place and is moving you deeper into your destiny.

7/27/06 . . . Choose Life

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live... - Deuteronomy 30:19.

I recently taped a large sign to the center of my television screen.  In large letters it says "choose life."  TV programming isn't what it used to be, and much of it should be avoided by Christians who want to be holy.  And yet I struggle because television can be highly entertaining, especially when I'm lonely or tired.  I want the sign on my TV to be a constant reminder that watching vulgar sitcoms and brutal dramas that cheapen the value of life is the same as choosing death.

Our days are filled with choices.  We can receive the blessings of  love, health, purity, generosity, creativity and everything that is good. Or we can receive the curses of anger, greed, perversion, brutality, sickness and fear.

Our choices affect the ones we love.  Whether good or evil, the things we
select touch every person in our realm of influence.

The message of Deuteronomy 30:19 is simple, yet powerful.  Please take a moment to read it again and let the meaning sink in.  Let me challenge you to memorize this verse, then make some "choose life" signs.  God will tell you where to put them.

7/19/06 . . . Pray, Then be Patient

Prayer is our first and finest weapon—never a last resort.  But after we've prayed according to what we know, taken any needed action and put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:13), the time will come to simply wait.  Patience is required, and here are some good reasons why:

God often intervenes quickly at our request, but other times we must wait while a sinner
slowly responds to His enlightenment and persuasion.

We may successfully bind a demonic force, but the person it was affecting could still be
entrenched in patterns of faulty thinking. Continued, patient prayer will be needed.

God may be using a circumstance to mature us.  Emotional growth and changes in our
character will not occur overnight.

Patience is a fruit of the Spirit that only grows in a climate of testing. Waiting and trusting
for answers to prayer is an excellent way to develop this trait.

Patiently waiting upon the Lord insures that we focus on His promises and His
character—abiding more often in His presence.

It's true that patience is needed for most of what we receive from God.   And whatever comes from Him is certainly worth the wait.

Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ - 2 Thessalonians 3:5.

7/10/06 . . . When We're Thirsty

I witnessed a delightful backyard scene today. My lawn sprinkler was set to oscillate between a crabapple tree and a newly planted shrub. From the kitchen window, I noticed some cardinals perched in the small, water-soaked tree. Thinking they would soon fly away to avoid the oncoming spray, I laughed out loud when I realized they were actually waiting to get wet!   They seemed to enjoy being washed as they happily drank from the leaves. When the shower reversed and moved to the hawthorn bush, some of the birds flew there to be sprinkled again right away.

It's important to know that under a tree in my front yard sit three perfectly good birdbaths that are always filled with water. Apparently, cardinals prefer the sprinkled drops that flow cool and perfectly fresh, straight from my well.

Just as the backyard birds position themselves to drink the purest water, so should we strive to be refreshed by the living water of God. We must fly to where we know He is. And if we see Him move, then we should quickly follow.

...As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God - Psalm 42:1,2.

7/8/06 . . . If We Faint Not

Evil spirits are the ultimate con artists. These fraudulent beings depend on trickery, betrayal and every sort of lie to disarm our potential and turn us away from God. A common but very effective lie is that "nothing will ever change"—that we will have to live with our present pain, hardship or trouble until the day we die. This lie alleges that God does not care and cannot be trusted. Once it is firmly established, this deception is a cancer that slowly and cruelly kills.

And let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not - Galatians 6:9.

If we faint not, then we will reap the fruit of our hope! We will gain all that God has
promised because He certainly can be trusted.

A season of warfare is upon us, so apathy is not an option. Christians must be on guard and always ready to fight—never yielding to self-pity or fear. Let's resolve to study the Word, learn what is true, and turn to God in prayer with every negative thought.   He will protect what is ours and bless us even further. We'll have peace in the midst of battles and victories at every turn. Our minds and spirits will be strong and never close to fainting.

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly - John 10:10.

7/1/06 . . . Meditate on These Things

Are you often on a treadmill of negative thoughts that last throughout the day? Is your glass often half empty instead of half full?   Maybe you see the dark side of every situation, and self-pity has become your loyal companion. Perhaps your imaginary confrontations are taking place with increasing frequency.  Most of us are familiar with these destructive ways of thinking. Many have been in its grip, then escaped and moved ahead. But some are still caught in the mire.

If you are engulfed in negative thoughts, please understand—they are not harmless. The enemy has an endless parade of distractions that will pull your thoughts away from the truth and down a path of hopelessness.  You will never effectively hear from God while your mind is cluttered with sinful, depressing thoughts.

Forgiveness of those who hurt you is imperative. This will quickly short-circuit the
enemy's plan to control your mind with bitterness.

You must lay down your life in total dependence on God and His Word—never
trusting your own strength or flawed understanding.

God's word is alive.   Reading it every day will cleanse your mind and change your
life forever.

The renewal of our minds—the change from selfishness to Godliness—is a process we must cooperate with.   The Holy Spirit doesn't remind us of scripture we've never heard before. But He often comes to our aid with words we have previously read.  Sometimes He whispers verses we haven't thought of in years.

God wants our thoughts to sparkle with purity and our words to carry great power. He has designed miracles for us to perform in these last days—but only if we're ready.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report if there is any virtue, and if there is anything  praiseworthy—meditate on these things - Philippians 4:8.

6/18/06 . . . Victory in Jesus

Christian growth leading to success is designed by God and always tailored individually.  Motivating factors are uniquely fitted to our personal needs and to God's agenda. Even with all this heavenly choreography, one ingredient is always required for advancement, and without it we will only spin our wheels. To effectively move forward, we must abide in Christ. "In Him" are all the answers and all the victories (John 15:4-10).

For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us - 2 Corinthians 1:20 .

In Him, all the promises are "YES!"  They come with a guarantee!  Let us always say "Amen" (so be it) to His glorious work in us and through us.  Then the victories will be very near, waiting only for their appointed time.

Let's draw near to the heart of the Lord.  Let's repent of every sin.  Let's submit to our wonderful God who has only our best in mind.  Jesus longs for intimacy with each of us, so let's get close and abide in Him.

6/14/06 . . . Are You Ready?

If the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them - Numbers 14:8,9 NIV.

Are you waiting for a major breakthrough of some kind?   Has God been whispering to you about bigger, better, more important things to come?   Scripture reveals that if the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into a land that flows with blessing.   So while we're waiting for the big change, we must be in preparation.

God isn't saying that we should earn our promotion. We're surely not capable of that.  Instead, He desires that we become mature so we will "swallow up" the enemy. We must know that every tyrant in the promised land has already been defeated. Turning back should never cross our minds, for that would be both cowardly and rebellious.

Are you single-minded in your devotion to God and His purpose? Nothing less will do. Are you ready to "lay it all down" and die for Him if necessary?   This attitude may sound extreme, but it's required for crossing the Jordan.

As we grow to be more like Jesus, the milk and honey we crave will no longer be the food of this world. Our greatest thirst will be for the presence of God, and our deepest hunger will be to please Him.

6/9/06 . . . God Is With Us!

I'm praising God all day today and maybe for all of the week!   He deftly won a battle for me this morning. I was completely helpless, and if not for the Lord's intervention, the results could have been quite negative. Instead, I was favored and given respect.

I've known for days that a conflict was coming, and I watched as the storm approached. Clouds of manipulation and strife rolled in—things that God really hates and things I've grown to detest.   When the tempest hit, I was surprised by its ferocity. But my preparation in prayer brought a swift and decisive triumph. This attacking force was no match for the power of God.

A mountain was moved for me today, and I want to shout about it!

". . . Call your councils of war, develop your strategies, prepare your plans of attack—and then die! For God is with us!" The LORD has said to me in the strongest terms: "Do not think like everyone else does. Do not be afraid that some plan conceived behind closed doors will be the end of you. Do not fear anything except the LORD Almighty. He alone is the Holy One. If you fear Him, you need fear nothing else. He will keep you safe" - Isaiah 8:10-14, NLT.

6/5/06 . . . Step Forward With Authority

Many years ago, I decided that intercessory prayer was not my calling.  When I was a new Christian, someone told me that only certain people are given the "gift of intercession." Since I didn't feel strongly compelled to pray all the time, I believed this must be true.  I told my friends that I didn't have this gift, but today I know that I was mistaken.  Over time, God has enlarged my heart, increased my faith and taught me the importance of prayer for every Christian.

We're all called to be prayer warriors—to prevail upon God for ourselves and for others. Many blessings will never come if we don't claim God's word and His will through prayer. And plenty of damage will occur if we don't assertively block and bind the enemy.

God has put us in charge here on Earth.  Therefore, He waits for us to pray before He will act.  Victories are won by faith as we verbally announce what belongs to the Kingdom of God.  Prayer declares our complete authority over the enemy, and restoration of what we've lost begins when we call it back.

We first learn to pray at a very personal level. Then we advance to pray for family, friends and surrounding situations. At some point, we are drawn to pray for larger needs—for countries and major situations.  This is normal activity for a healthy, growing Christian.

. . . if you say to this mountain, "Be removed and be cast into the sea," it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive - Matthew 21:21,22.

Yes, God has given His children full authority to take dominion of Earth—all possible because of Jesus' victory on the cross. Satan is good at stirring up trouble, but since Jesus' resurrection, this devil has no right. We can always make him stop.

6/2/06 . . . I Will Praise Him!

I've just returned from my daughter's wedding in California. The entire trip was a delight, from beginning to end. I was blessed in so many ways. The oceanside ceremony was breathtaking. The bride and groom were stunning, and the natural surroundings were a pure delight.

Throughout the long weekend, I saw vivid evidence of God's work in several lives. I've been praying for the maid of honor for about ten years, and I learned that she is now saved!   The young man who performed the ceremony is a friend of the groom and also a new Christian!   I met some members of the groom's extended family who inspired me with their faith.

In the days following the wedding, I explored the Big Sur coastline and was thrilled by bold Pacific vistas.  Blooming plants and pungent herbs adorned the cliffs and lined the pathways to the beaches.  I was met at the shore by golden sand and the bluest water I've ever seen.

I praise You, Lord, for Your mighty work!   I thank You for Your love and Your mercy!   I thank You for Your many blessings!

I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High - Psalm 9:1,2.

5/18/06 . . . An Appointed Time

Don't be discouraged if your vision from God has not yet materialized, even if ten years have passed.  Please do not give up. Whatever the Lord has told you to do, no matter how big or seemingly small—just keep on doing it!

Noah worked on the ark for a long time. Bible scholars estimate that somewhere from 70 to 120 years passed between God's instructions for building the ark and when the flood began.

Joseph dreamed that all of his brothers along with "the sun, the moon and the eleven stars" would bow down to him.  At least thirteen years went by while Joseph honed his management skills—first as a slave and then as a prisoner. Finally, the day arrived when he was promoted to second-in-command over all of Egypt.

In God's appointed time, each of our destinies will unfold. We must be patient and not rush ahead with our own schedules and bright ideas. Sometimes our faith may waiver, but as we persevere with trust and obedience, our roots will grow deep to strengthen our hold on the glory that lies ahead.

For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry - Habakkuk 2:3.

5/13/06 . . . Only One Chance

We only have one life to live in our human bodies—only one chance to honor God by fulfilling our destiny here on Earth. Will you rise to this glorious challenge? The end-time harvest has already begun. Millions are being saved, and miracles are increasing. If you want to be involved, it's time to turn the dial on your commitment meter away from "relaxed" and over to "intense."  All of heaven is watching to see what you will do:

. . . we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us . . . - Hebrews 12:1.

It's time to stop playing around.  Do you understand the importance of spending time with God?  Do you know that reading His Word, sitting quietly in His presence and praising Him throughout the day connects us to His heart, His plans and His power?

Are you ready to experience more of God? Do you long to feel His presence and
hear His audible voice?

Can you imagine laying hands on the sick and restoring them to perfect health? Do
you see their joyful tears as they rise from their bed and walk?  Miracles like this
bring many to salvation.

Do you see yourself teaching those who hunger for God?  Inspired words coming
from your mouth can turn a life around!

God is waiting to release His power to you.   He wants to work His miracles through you.  But  for this to happen, your priorities must be in order. You must sacrifice your right to all that you think is yours.  God must be your first priority—far ahead of television, the internet and "personal fulfillment."

Does this sound radical?  Yes, maybe.  But "radical" is what God wants.  He never insists on anything, but He gently asks for everything.

. . . . . be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will accept. When you think of what He has done for you, is this too much to ask? Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect His will really is - Romans 12:1,2 NLT.

5/2/06 . . . Amazing Prayer

We must never underestimate the power of prayer—our spiritual nuclear weapon.  When we get a true revelation of its potential, we have reason to be excited.  We're also held accountable to exercise this power.  Once our eyes have been opened, there is no turning back.  Here is a simple list that may inspire you to learn more about prayer. The Holy Spirit will be your guide in this amazing, lifelong journey.

Prayer is a privilege and a mandate for every Christian.

Prayer has several facets, and meeting with God is the best of them all.

Christians have authority to take dominion here on Earth.

Many events will only occur if  Christians pray them into being.

Holiness strengthens our prayer, and sin will hinder it.

Humility captures the attention of God.

Faith is required.

Unforgiveness is not allowed.

Problems reveal specific needs.  This enables specific, effective prayer.

Interacting with the body of Christ will fortify our prayer.

Declaring relevant scripture is like using the key that fits a lock.

Fasting will super-charge our prayer life.

Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise . . . . . The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops - James 5:13,16-18 NIV.

4/27/06 . . . Don't Be Afraid

God will tell us wonderful things, then test us on what we've heard. We'll find ourselves immersed in vivid realities that are both frightening and exciting.  Weak and stumbling at first, we will eventually succeed through God's indwelling power.

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the
victory that has overcome the world—our faith - 1 John 5:4.

The enemy is expecially vicious during our times of testing. He works hard to build walls of distrust between us and God, bombarding us with lies meant to overwhelm us with fear.  As scarey as this may sound, God only allows the nasty behavior of satan when it will ultimately work for our good. The evil one may be smarter than us, but he's nothing compared to God. Abiding in Christ is our perfect protection and will carry us through all danger. We truly have nothing to fear.

Christian virtues like patience and humility are not much fun to acquire and will be severely tested. People will mistreat us, but God requires that we answer with grace. Lies will abound while we learn to pray for our persecutors.  Holy Christians are powerful, so satan is fiercely opposed to any growth.  But again, we have nothing to fear.  We must simply focus on truth instead of the turmoil around us.

. . . He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies - John 8:44 NIV.

Yes, satan is a liar—just a dirty puff of smoke.  We needn't be tricked into overreacting or getting derailed from God's purpose.  Instead, we can let every lie remind us of the truth.

4/22/06 . . . When the Time is Right

Are you oppressed?   Poor?   Discouraged?   Are you unhappy with your life situation and yearning to realize the dreams that God has placed in your heart?  Well, it's time to look up!  The Lord has a plan for your future, and He is preparing you to walk at those higher levels.  You should not be surprised when His training becomes rigorous.

Experience with oppression is valuable. Dealing with tyrants and bullies will fine-tune
your skills in spiritual warfare and draw you deeper into the Word.

Certain truths are only understood by the poor. The presence of God is most often
found by those who know they need Him.

The "fellowship of Jesus' suffering" goes hand in hand with resurrection power
       (Philippians 3:10).

Lowly circumstances are tools in the hand of God. Each discomfort has a divine purpose, and the distress is only intended for a season of growth. Our Lord of grace and mercy desires for us to be Christlike more than He desires for us to be comfortable. As we set aside our sinful ways and submit to His methods of refinement, God will move mountains on our behalf.

"For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now I will arise," says the Lord; "I will set him in the safety for which he yearns" - Psalm 12:5.

Yes, yes, yes! God wants to bless us in many ways, but only when the time is right so the gifts will not distract us from Himself. Jesus came to set us completely free from bondage.  He came to bless us so we can bless others.  We will glorify and magnify Him for all the world to see (Isaiah 61:1-3).

4/19/06 . . . Seated in the Heavenlies

The Holy Spirit often gets my attention in the early morning, right after I awaken and before my thoughts get too active.  Today's sun had not yet risen when I was given this reminder: "You are seated in the heavenlies with Christ."

What a wonderful truth to begin my day!  Because I am in the heavenlies with Christ,
then all things—all of my problems—are under His feet and also under mine.

And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all -
Ephesians 1:22,23.

Since I abide in Christ, I sit in the same heavenly seat that He does, right beside the Father. When I'm submitted to Jesus' headship, I have authority and power.  Instead of fretting about the obstacles before me or the problems of this world, I will boldly proclaim scripture and know it will come to pass.  Because Jesus intercedes with love, I will do the same.

4/12/06 . . . Surrounded

Three of my favorite things are springtime, rain and Saturday mornings.  I was thrilled that all of these blessings arrived together last weekend.   Distant thunder rumbled from early morning until mid-afternoon.  During a break in the weather, I photographed stormy skies above the wooded horizon.  Raindrops clinging to petals and leaves are now preserved in digital files.

Rain brings a welcome respite from the ordinary.  Gently softening the world around us, it freshens all that it touches. This mild spring storm brought renewal to the land and peace to my spirit.

Because rain is all encompassing, it makes me aware of the same attribute of God. I see Him in the darkened clouds, and I watch as He ruffles the trees.  I breath in His scent of rain-soaked air.  God exhales water across my lawn and lovingly rattles the vent on my roof.   I'm captured by His mighty presence—completely surrounded and thoroughly safe.

In the spiritual realm, God always hovers over me and often hems me in. He arranges my life so I can't escape the growth He has planned for me. Though frightened at times by being constrained, I remember that He is the same wonderful God who inhabits the wind and the rain. Yes, I'm encircled by His purpose and caught in the nets of His love.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever - Psalm 125:2.

4/7/06 . . . Be Enriched

Some people use spam blockers or the "block sender" option to deflect unwanted email and minimize internet intrusions. None of us want to be swamped with unwanted communication.  For similar reasons, we tend to block out spiritual information if it doesn’t come from “approved” sources.  Since we can only read so much, shouldn't it be something we agree with?  Not necessarily!  This attitude of exclusion can be dangerous. The Holy Spirit urges us to seek all the wisdom He offers. He wants to reveal every truth that we need for victorious living (John 16:13).

Has your Christian environment become strict and narrow? Let me challenge you to
branch out—always using the Word as a plumb line. Take a look at some things
you’ve previously held at a distance.

Learn the value and purpose of today's prophetic movement. Read about the gift of healing and how it is active in the body of Christ today. Select one of the books written about prayer, by those who effectively intercede.  Dare to believe that God speaks through your dreams and that you can learn to interpret them.  Carefully use the internet to discover some new and anointed Christian ministries.

He has enriched your church with the gifts of eloquence and every kind of knowledge - 1 Cor. 1:5 NLT.

Please embrace the "full gospel." Don't discard a particular truth because of family taboos or denominational tradition. The grace of God is rich and good. We need to drink every drop.

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good - Romans 12:6-9.

4/1/06 . . . Who Will Go?

Have you imagined being a hero like David—killing the local giants?  Or being installed as "God's person in high places," just like Joseph was?  Do you envision traveling the land like Paul and shining a light wherever you go?

These men were just as human as you and I, but each was ordained for a special purpose. Each had a role to play in God's unfolding plan.  The Bible clearly portrays their weaknesses, and in spite of these, they rose to prominent places in history.  It was not human strength but the mighty grace of God that carried them over obstacles and all the way to victory.

God also has plans for you and me. His purpose for us might be just as important as that of David, Joseph and Paul. If we truly believe that “Christ in us” can do all things, we'll expect big assignments from Him.

Riches and honor come from You alone, for You rule over everything. Power and might are in Your hand, and it is at Your discretion that people are made great and given strength. Oh, our God, we thank You and praise Your glorious name! - 1 Chronicles 29:12,13 NLT.

If we believe that God will use us, then we'll listen intently for His voice. When we hear Him say, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" our excited reply will be, "Here am I! Send me" (Isaiah 6:8).

3/26/06 . . . Moving Closer

Christians move closer to the fullness of God with every time of testing. As long as we're obedient, we continually step to higher plateaus. Each new level is an excellent place to be—unless we stay there too long.

We cannot rush the refinement that is vital to our destiny, but neither should we master a small domain and plan to stay there forever.   God wants us always moving closer to Him.

Mercy and grace will turn up the heat in our comfortable situation. Soon we'll be sweating and feeling faint—looking for ways to get relief.   If you're like me, you may look to the left or step to the right, being full of bright ideas. But the temperature just keeps rising.

Now we reach a critical point. Relief is close at hand, and it will come in one of two ways:

We can pridefully choose to stay where we are, seeking relief from familiar sources and using our own careful reasoning. The Refining Fire will back away, and His heat will slowly subside. Beware of making this choice.

For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the
fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns
that can hold no water - Jeremiah 2:13.

The correct choice is to humbly bow at the feet of Jesus.  The fresh scent of His love will quickly revive us. Clear direction will fortify our purpose, and truth will purify our hope.  When we open our eyes and look around, we'll find that we're on higher ground.

Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish; You have destroyed all those who desert You for harlotry. But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Your works - Psalm 73:25-28.

3/18/06 . . . Christ in You

Within all of us is a realm of understanding.  Inside this sphere of enlightenment are many segments of truth, just like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. When God knows we are ready, He connects a few of our puzzle pieces to display a larger, stronger portion of His truth. The beauty we see is familiar, but also fresh and new.

I'm well acquainted with the life-changing power of Christ within me, and after many personal victories, God has begun to change the nature of my battles. As He fits together more pieces of truth for me, His plans become clearer, and my own private goals become less important. I'm beginning to fight on a larger, less personal scale.

Sometimes the enemy blinds us to what is right beneath our nose. But God is good, and He restores the vision of those who want to see.  He deftly connected another piece of truth at a home-group meeting last night, and my eyes were opened to a mission field that is very close at hand.  Today I know that "Christ in me" has purposed to touch some needy people within my reach.  My helping hand and my truthful words of encouragement will be energized by God.

This writing is not to impress you with God's activity in my life but to encourage you to submit to God and always be available. Let Him work His glorious wonders through you! "Christ in You" is the only hope for the perishing souls in this world.

Be diligent in seeking God and His truth.

Humble yourself before God, so He can enlarge your understanding.

Apply the truth that you already have, so you will be given more.

. . . that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power . . . - Ephesians 1:17-19.

3/9/06 . . . The Fullness of His Purpose

Every Christian is given a unique purpose and a glorious mission, but God doesn't provide us with a detailed blueprint. Our first instruction may be nothing more than a general direction to travel. Sometimes we see just a few steps ahead as we travel unfamiliar roads. Faith is always required for us to move forward.  If we don't yet see the form or the color of what is ordained, the voice of Hope will whisper of advancement, just around the bend.

The enemy suggests that God is cruel—that He requires entirely too much from us. We're told that our hope is foolish and that God cannot be trusted. But if we listen instead to the Spirit, we receive power and revelation for the days ahead.

We can always thank the Lord that we're moving forward. The fullness of His purpose for us is closer every day.  Our faith is in His character.  We know His word is true, and His plans are good.  We'll see the shape of His promises at their appointed time.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope - Jeremiah 29:11.

3/4/06 . . . Morning

Potential and promise rise with the sun.  New hope infuses the morning mist to refresh our spirits.  Natural elements greet our senses and beckon us to rejoice.

Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising - Isaiah 60:1-3.

Today is a good day to learn of the Lord! Step into His presence with thanksgiving and praise. Draw close to His lips, and hear His plans. Believe His word, and submit to His will.

Awake tomorrow and every day thereafter with Promise in your heart.

2/27/06 . . . Hope in God

I've been taught that when God repeats Himself, then we should really pay attention. A few years ago, I found some verses that are repeated almost word for word—three times!   Let's take a close look, and let's believe what God is showing us through the words of a psalmist:

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within
me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His
countenance - Psalm 42:5.

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within
me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, the help of my
countenance and my God - Psalm 42:11.

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within
me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my
countenance and my God - Psalm 43:5.

The full content of Psalms 42 and 43 explains why the psalmist writes these words. Just like us, his faith was being tested. When he became discouraged, he would remember his past experience with God.  He would think of all the times he was helped and protected.  Then he would open his mouth in praise—over and over again.

2/24/06 . . . To See Him Clearly

New Christians are met with wave after wave of refreshing life-changing truth. Healing truth. Nurturing truth. Whatever truth is needed most. Our Father loves to build us up. But after awhile, when He knows that we're ready, the truth will come in less appealing forms. It won't sound as nice or taste as sweet as when we first began.

Truth will either tear us down or strengthen us—whichever the Spirit intends. Our selfish nature has to go, and truth will strip it away. But truth will also fill us with more of God.

In theory, the process of cleansing, growth and total submission to God sounds quite simple—also noble and exciting. But in reality, letting go of our sinful, independent self is difficult and painful. If there was an alternate route, not many would travel this bumpy road that is paved with discomfort and sorrow.

I've heard it said that God is more concerned with our sanctification than He is with our contentment. I know this is true because my "comfort zone" disappeared over 20 years ago. My personal road to humility and holiness has been watered with tears and lined with the marks of  dragging feet.

I sometimes slow down and occasionally stop, but I will never leave the path that God has set before me.  Yes, I could choose another direction, but I'm always compelled to stay on this course. Why?   Because it leads me ever closer to the beautiful face of Jesus. I want to see Him clearly, right here on Earth, long before I die.

Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face. Selah - Psalm 24:3-6.

2/18/06 . . . Handle With Care

A father sat in his recliner, reading the Saturday news and drinking coffee. One of his young sons played on the floor nearby. This man watched his child, and his heart swelled with love. After awhile, the father began to wonder what his other son was doing. He said, "Sammy, will you please go find Luke? Tell him to come inside for a minute." Sammy ran to the fenced back yard and saw his brother playing under a large shade tree.

With a shrill voice, he yelled, "Hey, Luke! Daddy says to get in the house right now! He wants to talk to you!" To Luke's four-year-old ears, the message was foreboding. It seemed that he was in trouble, but he didn't know what for. Confused and sad, Luke hid behind the tree and quietly cried until his father came to find him.

Sammy misrepresented his father by conveying the message poorly.  His
choice of words and tone of voice drastically altered the meaning and caused
his brother to be afraid.

Even adults fall prey to careless communication.  Damage is done, and lives are changed by imprudent verbal mistakes, often delivered from prideful lips. An effective messenger always delivers the words exactly as they are intended, not filtering them through personal views or emotions.

For Christians—ambassadors of Christ—the standard is very high. While speaking as friends, neighbors, teachers, preachers and prophets, we must handle truth with the utmost care. Our words should always align with God's heart.

Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed - Psalm 85:10.

2/11/06 . . . Rest in Hope

I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.  Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope - Psalm 16:8,9.

Hope feels cool and fresh like the mist of early morning.

Hope shines a light in the darkest of storms.

Hope is strong but speaks with a gentle voice.

Hope offers shade, like a large, leafy tree.

Hope is alive.  It is the breath of God on our cheek.

Don't ever ignore the voice of Hope when it speaks to your discouraged soul. When you feel its cool caress on your weary shoulders, then stop to let it nurture and refresh you.  Rest in Hope's abundant shade, and let its pure light guide you through every trial.

2/6/06 . . . Never Give Up

Winston Churchill is often quoted as saying, "Never, never, never give up." I've seen billboards in the poorest areas of Los Angeles displaying Mr. Churchill's face along with those words in two-foot-high letters. I was only driving through, but I felt the impact of the message.

The words are especially powerful when attributed to someone of Winston Churchill's stature, but they carry supernatural authority when spoken by God. He was the first to command that we never give up. The sparkling threads of hope and faith are woven throughout the Bible.  They tell us over and over, in a myriad of ways, to always look forward to the rewards of God.

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint - Isaiah 40:28-31.

We easily reach the end of our own strength. Human abilities will always be inadequate for the demands of life on Earth.  But we should never, never, NEVER give up on God.

1/28/06 . . . Do You Know Him?

Going to church is a very good thing, unless it's a substitute for building a real relationship with the Lord. If church attendance and a few highly visible good works are the sum of your "Christianity," then you have been deceived.

Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' - Matthew 7:21-23.

Those who do the Father's will shall enter the kingdom of Heaven. It won't be those who perform the occasional good deed when it's convenient and when it helps their image. And it won't be those who choose political correctness instead of holiness. True Christians are those who submit to God consistently and wholeheartedly—even when it hurts.

Doing God's will always inspires a closer relationship, and this intimacy in turn arouses more obedience. Both intimacy and obedience are fueled by the Word of God.  Because the Bible is readily available, then you are responsible for seeking God's presence and learning what He requires of you.

Obedience to the Father's will is not a piece of cake. It can't be accomplished without abiding in Christ (John 15:4).  While you're walking with the Lord, learning humility and receiving His grace, you will gradually get to know Him.

You are My friends if you do whatever I command you - John 15:14.

If your Sunday morning Christianity is a hollow pretense, then you're literally playing with fire. Please spend time with God before it's too late. Learn what He requires of you. And by all means, take His hand and hold on tight. You were not created to be alone.

1/20/06 . . . Loving Our Enemies

Learning to love our enemies is difficult, and that's an understatement. Emotional challenges and ethical questions arise. When does a simple offense cross the line and become abuse?  What do we stand up to, and what do we let slide?

A balanced response is important.  If a person is being abusive, we should calmly and respectfully stand up for what is right. Another key is "tough love." Sometimes the most loving action is one of discipline.  Of course, turning the other cheek is most often called for, and this mild response can be difficult.

All situations are different, so there is no blueprint for success. However, some basic requirements exist for loving our enemies effectively:

Abide in Christ.  Loving the enemy is not possible apart from unity with our Lord. We
can't bear good fruit unless we abide in the Vine (John 15:4).

Humility is essential.  A willingness to submit ourselves to God at every turn is required.
Humility pleases God tremendously, so we gain much more from Him than we ever give
up to a human being (1 Peter 5:6,7).

Suffering is required if we're going to be Christlike. We learn the "fellowship of his
suffering" (Philippians 3:10) at the hands of our enemies.  Even those who love us will
occasionally hurt us, so we shouldn't be surprised by the actions of those who don't.

Don't hold on to anger.  Prolonged anger is destructive, but the prayer of a wounded
Christian for their assailant truly blesses the heart of God and gets Him involved.

We must not judge.  Every time we're mistreated, we have an opportunity to pray for the
offender. With new insight into their darkness, we can pray for them effectively. If we
choose intercession instead of anger, then life-changing power is released to the situation.

Forgiveness is a hallmark of Jesus' teaching. He forgave us completely and paid for our sin
with His blood.  He requires that we forgive others. Anything less is unacceptable.

...therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven - Luke 6:36,37.

1/16/06 . . . Dreams

God still speaks to His people in dreams. The sooner we realize and believe this will actually happen to us, the sooner we can receive the benefits. These nocturnal messages send hope, direction, correction and sometimes warning.

And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come - Genesis 42:9.

Not every dream is from God, but if we're pursuing a close relationship with Him, chances are that He will sometimes talk to us at night when we're not distracted by daily activity and by our own thoughts. In my case, if I remember a dream at all, then I know it's probably from God.

Keeping a log of your dreams will help you remember what God has said.  Write down your dreams from beginning to end, and record every detail. In these messages from God, almost every element is meaningful.  We can usually interpret our own dreams because many of the symbols and images are unique to our own experience. God speaks in a personal language to each of us, and the Holy Spirit gives enlightenment when we ask for His help.

Because the body of Christ works together, some Christians have been gifted as interpreters of dreams, to help reveal hidden truths.  However, certain dream symbols are universal, and these can be learned from Christian experts on this subject.

1/14/06 . . . Holiness Brings Change

Jesus displayed unprecedented power when He lived here on Earth.  This happened because of His close contact with the Father—made possible by His holiness.  He set an exciting example for Christians to follow.  For us, choosing holiness requires great courage and humility. We must be in love with the Lord to even desire this trait, and only with the Holy Spirit are we able to walk such an elevated path.

And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools will not go about on it. No lion will be there, nor will any ferocious beast get up on it; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there... -
Isaiah 35:8,9 NIV.

Holiness is not being a squeaky-clean "goodie two shoes" who legalistically follows the rules. Holiness happens when we spend time with God. Our spirits awaken to the Christ within us, and we receive revelation knowledge instead of merely compiling facts. Holiness is admitting our weakness and submitting to the powerful grace of God that makes all things new.

"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time... - 1 Peter 5:5,6.
